A granite rock shaped like a giant egg rises beside the Hyderabad–Warangal highway about 50 km from Hyderabad, and a medieval fort sits on top of it. The Bhongir Fort trek climbs steps and sloping rock to a ruined citadel, usually in about an hour, and is one of the most popular short outings from the city. This guide covers five ways to do it, the fort’s history, the distance, climb time, how to get there from Hyderabad, and the entry and guided-hike prices. A timely note: a ₹56.81 crore redevelopment with a ropeway was due to finish by October 2, and we found no report of its completion, so check what is open before you go.

Best Bhongir Fort Trek Experiences: Five Ways to Climb

These five are our own selection from what the sources describe, and prices and timings below come from commercial and older pages.

1. The Classic Self-Guided Climb

The Classic Self-Guided Climb
MOSES MANOBHILASH

Pay the small entry fee and climb the carved steps at your own pace. Outlook Traveller says the route has many hundreds of steps cut into the rock, and a Hyderabad blogger describes uneven rock steps in the middle and a final stretch with no steps, relying on a metal railing over sloping rock.

2. An Early Morning Group Hike

 An Early Morning Group Hike

Hike operator goXp describes a half-day hike from a Hyderabad meetup point at 6:00 AM with departure at 6:15 AM, returning around 9:30 AM, and says it is open to kids, with participants asked to confirm they are in good health. The operator’s page gives no price for the hike alone.

3. Hike Plus Rappelling

Hike Plus Rappelling

goXp lists a combined hike and rappelling for ₹1,200 per person, including the entry ticket and excluding transport, on an itinerary that starts the hike at 8:00 AM and descends by 12:00 PM. The page is undated and refers to a 2017 blog post and 2020 images.

4. Rock Climbing and Bouldering

Rock Climbing and Bouldering

The News Minute, in a 2016 photo essay, says a local rock climbing school offers bouldering, rock climbing and rappelling. Telangana Today, in 2021, says a well-known rock climbing school here trained Malavath Poorna before she climbed Mount Everest, which we could not verify.

5. A Heritage Circuit With Yadagirigutta

A Heritage Circuit With Yadagirigutta

A blogger suggests pairing the fort with Yadagirigutta Temple about 10 km away, and Incredible India lists Surendrapuri, about 11 km north, and the Kulpakji Jain Temple at Kolanupaka among nearby sights.

Bhongir Fort History: From Tribhuvanagiri to the Qutb Shahis

Bhongir Fort History

The Bhongir Fort history is told differently by different sources, so the dates below are given as the sources give them:

  1. The founding: Wikipedia says the fort was built in 1076 AD (infobox) for the Western Chalukya ruler Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI, though its own text also says the 10th century. Trawell says the 12th century, The News Minute says tradition holds it was built in the early 12th century, and Outlook Traveller says the 10th century. One listing credits the Musunuri Nayaks with first building it.
  2. The name: Tribhuvanagiri, after the founder, became Bhuvanagiri and then Bhongir. Another account credits a legend of a shepherd couple or a King Rajagiri, which Wikipedia marks as needing a citation.
  3. The Kakatiyas: Wikipedia and Trawell link the fort to Queen Rudramadevi and her grandson Prataparudra, and The News Minute says the Kakatiyas held it for a while.
  4. The Bahmanis: The News Minute says Aladdin Hassan Bahman Shah, the first Bahmani ruler, captured it in the mid-14th century.
  5. The Qutb Shahis: After the Bahmani Sultanate split, it passed to the Qutb Shahis of Golconda, who posted a governor and sometimes imprisoned would-be usurpers there, per The News Minute.
  6. The Mughal era: Wikipedia says the Mughals gained power after invading Golconda in 1687 and that Sarvai Papanna took over in 1708. A statue of Sardar Sarvai Papanna stands at the foot of the climb, according to Telangana Today and The News Minute.

The rock itself is a granite batholith, according to The News Minute, shaped like a smooth egg and rising more than 500 feet. Its height is given as 184.5 m in one place and more than 500 feet (about 152 m) in another on Wikipedia, and Incredible India says about 700 feet. Features include a moat, trap doors, stables, armoury, ponds and a natural cleft that divides the fort into lower and upper parts. A rumoured tunnel to Golconda Fort is unverified, and Telangana Today says there are no visible signs of it. Wikipedia lists the Archaeological Survey of India as the governing body.

Bhongir Fort Trek Distance: Road and Climb

Searches for Bhongir Fort Trek distance can mean two things. For the road from Hyderabad, the sources give 45 to 54 km. For the walk itself, none of the sources we read gave a length in kilometres, so these are the proxies they give:

  1. Road distance: About 45 km per a blogger, 47 km per Wikipedia, around 50 km per Telangana Today, Incredible India and another blogger, and 54 km per Trawell.
  2. Height: More than 500 feet per most sources, with the conflicting figures noted above.
  3. Steps: A blogger counted about 3,000 going up with a step counter, while TripAdvisor reviewers estimate about 300 steps and Outlook Traveller says many hundreds. These conflict by a factor of ten, so we give no single figure.
  4. Station: The fort is 1.3 km from Bhuvanagiri railway station, according to Trawell.
  5. Planned ropeway: About 1,020 m long with a vertical rise of about 180 m, according to a June 2026 report.

Bhongir Fort Trek Time: How Long the Climb Takes

The Bhongir Fort Trek time is usually about an hour up, but the sources vary:

  1. About 40 minutes: Outlook Traveller (August 2024).
  2. About 45 minutes: A 2021 blogger at a slower pace with many photo and rest breaks.
  3. About one hour: Trawell and The News Minute. Another blogger descended within an hour.
  4. Two to three hours round trip: One TripAdvisor reviewer, including time at the top.
  5. About four hours with rappelling: goXp’s itinerary runs from the 8:00 AM hike start to a 12:00 PM descent.

Opening hours also vary: Trawell and a listing site say 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, while a blogger and TripAdvisor say 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. A November 2023 reviewer said the base gate stays locked until 10 AM, which sits oddly with goXp’s 8:00 AM start, so confirm group-access arrangements with the operator.

Bhongir Fort Trek From Hyderabad: A Day Plan

Bhongir Fort Trek From Hyderabad

For the Bhongir Fort Trek from Hyderabad, here is our own suggested day, built from the sources:

  1. Leave early: A blogger left Hyderabad around 6:30 AM and says traffic delayed them considerably. TravelTriangle puts the drive at roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic.
  2. Have breakfast on the highway: One blogger stopped for breakfast about 20 km out on the Warangal highway and another mentions it for food stops, and both found the roads in good condition.
  3. Be at the gate by 10 AM: Parking is next to the entrance, according to a blogger, and crowds were heavier by around 12:30 PM.
  4. Climb and rest: Allow about an hour up, with a rest lawn halfway, then time at the top and the descent.
  5. Eat in town or on the way back: One blogger found lunch options limited in the small town, so plan food in advance.
  6. Add Yadagirigutta: About 10 to 11 km away, as a second stop.

What to carry, per the bloggers: sturdy shoes with grip, extra water since there are no shops once you start climbing, snacks, a hat, and sanitiser. One adds that there are no waste bins beyond the entrance, so avoid plastic bottles.

Bhongir Fort Trek Price: Entry and Guided Hikes

The Bhongir Fort Trek price has two layers, the entry fee and any operator charges. Figures from commercial pages and reviews, which may be out of date:

  1. Indian adults and children: ₹10 for adults and ₹5 for children, according to a travel listing (copyright 2022) and a 2021 blog, and TripAdvisor reviewers from 2021 and 2022 report the same, with children under 10 at ₹5. A 2016 blog says ₹5.
  2. Foreign visitors: ₹100 per person, per the same listing.
  3. Cameras and show: ₹50 per still camera, ₹200 per video camera and ₹130 for the Light and Sound Show, per the listing.

Best Time to Visit Bhongir Fort

TravelTriangle (updated November 2024) recommends October to March, when temperatures are about 15 °C to 30 °C, and its FAQ says October to February. It advises avoiding April to June, when it passes 40 °C, and July to September, when the monsoon makes paths slippery. A blogger found a cloudy, pleasant day especially good for views. Late October is therefore in the recommended window.

How to Reach Bhongir Fort

Bhongir is on the Hyderabad–Warangal highway, about 47 to 54 km from Hyderabad. TravelTriangle lists car, bus and taxi, and Trawell puts the fort 1.3 km from Bhuvanagiri railway station and 11 km from Yadagirigutta. Incredible India names Rajiv Gandhi International Airport as the major airport.

Timing note: Deccan Chronicle and Webnewswire reported on June 22, 2026 that Telangana’s tourism minister, Jupally Krishna Rao, directed officials to complete all Bhongir Fort works by October 2, with the year not stated, and expressed dissatisfaction with delays. The ₹56.81 crore project, under the Centre’s Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, includes a ropeway of about 1,020 m costing ₹17.91 crore, a hotel, parking, an interpretation centre, step repair and heritage restoration. Neither article says whether the fort stays open during the works, and we found no report of completion or of ropeway ticket prices. Confirm access with the Telangana tourism office or the fort gate before travelling.
