Mandvi is a port town on the Kutch coast that has built wooden ships for roughly 400 years, has a golden-brown beach lined with camels and windmills, and keeps a 1929 palace of the Kutch maharajas by the sea. It also sits in the same region as the Great Rann, which is where the topic line’s “Rann meets the sea” idea comes from. This guide to Mandvi Gujarat covers five stops, the town’s history, the beach in detail, the surrounding villages, and when and how to go. A timely point: the Rann Utsav season is listed to open on November 1, 2026, and the cool months from November to February are the recommended time for the beach.

Mandvi City: A Port Town With a 400-Year-Old Shipyard

As a Mandvi City profile, Wikipedia calls Mandvi a beach town with a municipality in Kachchh district, where the Rukmavati River meets the Gulf of Kutch, about 56 km south of Bhuj, with no rail service. Sources disagree on when it was founded, and on how many people live there:

  1. Founding: Incredible India says it was established in 1574 by Khengarji, king of Kutch. Gujarat Tourism says 1580, and Wikipedia gives 1580 and 1581 on the same page.
  2. Name: Incredible India says it is named after Sage Mandavya of the Mahabharata.
  3. Trade: Incredible India says merchants reportedly owned about 400 vessels by the 18th century, trading with East Africa, the Malabar coast and the Persian Gulf. Its importance declined with the rise of Mumbai.
  4. What remains: Parts of the fort wall and bastions, per Incredible India, and the 1883 Rukmavati Bridge, per Wikipedia.
  5. Population: Wikipedia’s infobox gives 91,330 (2023) while its text says about 51,000, so no reliable figure is given here.

Mandvi India: Which Mandvi Do You Mean?

Searches for Mandvi India turn up more than one place. Wikipedia has an article for Mandvi in Kachchh, the beach town covered here, and a separate one for Mandvi in Surat district. Mandvi Kutch Gujarat: Where It Sits Relative to the Rann

Mandvi in Kutch, Gujarat, is on the southern edge of Kutch district, but not on the Great Rann. The Rann Utsav tent city is at Dhordo, which a commercial booking site says is about 80 km from Bhuj, roughly a two-hour drive, and which lists the 2026-27 season as November 1, 2026 to March 7, 2027. We found no Mandvi to Dhordo distance. For a Mandvi Kutch Gujarat itinerary that also covers the Rann, the Rann Utsav page suggests staying at the Dhordo tent city and setting aside a day for the beach and palace, which is a promotional recommendation. Our own suggestion: use Bhuj as the base, since the sources give it as the nearest airport and railway station for both.
