Matara is a busy commercial city on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, about 160 km from Colombo, and it is often treated as a stop on the way to somewhere else. Look closer and it has a Portuguese and Dutch fort, a star-shaped fort, a lighthouse at the island’s southernmost point, a tunnel temple and a calm reef beach. This guide to the best places to visit in Matara covers five stops, the forts and heritage, picks by interest, a one-day route, costs, day trips, hidden gems, and when and how to go. A timely point: late October is on the wetter side of the year on this coast, so check the forecast and keep the plan flexible.
Best Places to Visit in Matara: Five Stops
These five are named across several guides. Fees and opening details come from the pages named and may have changed.
1. The Star Fort

Wikipedia says the Dutch built it on the western side of the Nilwala River after the 1761 rebellion and completed it in 1765, and calls its star shape unique. It has a moat and a central well, and a travel guide says entry is free.
2. Polhena Beach

A calm beach about 2 km from the city centre, protected by a coral reef. A June 2026 guide says turtles are often seen and snorkel hire costs about USD 3 to 5, and advises snorkelling in the morning for better visibility. Another guide warns about currents, sharp coral and boat traffic.
3. Paravi Duwa (Parey Dewa) Temple

A small Buddhist temple on an island just offshore, reached by a cable-stayed footbridge built in 2008, according to Wikipedia, which spells it Parewi Dewa. Visitors are asked to keep silence and decorum.
4. Dondra Head Lighthouse

Wikipedia’s lighthouse page says it was completed in 1890, stands 49 metres (161 feet) tall with 196 steps and is Sri Lanka’s tallest lighthouse, at the southernmost point of the island about 6 km southeast of Matara. It was designed by Sir James Nicholas Douglass. A June 2026 guide gives entry as about LKR 300. Wikipedia’s Matara page describes it as Dutch-built, which conflicts with the lighthouse page, and we went with the more specific page.
5. Weherahena Temple

In eastern Matara, Wikipedia says it was built in 1909 and renovated in 1990, and is known for its wall paintings and a tall Buddha statue. The Sunday Observer describes a 600-foot tunnel with Jataka story paintings, and two travel pages give the Buddha as over 25 metres tall. Photography is strictly regulated or prohibited according to two guides.
Matara Attractions: Forts, Churches and Colonial History

The best-known Matara attractions are historic, and the sources date them as follows:
- Matara Fort: Wikipedia says the Portuguese built it in 1560 and the Dutch substantially rebuilt it in 1640, on a promontory between the Nilwala lagoon and the ocean, with a well-preserved rampart. Its entry is free according to a travel guide.
- Dutch Reformed Church: Inside the fort, dating from 1706, according to Wikipedia.
- The Star Fort: Sources disagree on its shape. Pickyourtrail and the Sunday Observer describe six points guarded by cannons, while a June 2026 guide calls it a pentagonal bastion. Pickyourtrail adds a central well and two prisons, and the Sunday Observer says it is now a museum on Matara’s history.
- Old Dutch Trade Centre (Nupe Market): A former Dutch trading hub, now a market, with high clay-tiled roofs supported by wooden beams, according to Pickyourtrail.
- British capture: Wikipedia says the British took the fort in 1796.
