Above Chikmagalur’s coffee country, the hill station of Kemmangundi has a ridge walk locals and visitors call Z Point, after the path’s zigzag shape. The Z Point trek leads through forest and grassland to a viewpoint over the Western Ghats, and it is usually done as a half-day outing with a stop at Shanti Falls on the way. This guide covers five ways to do it, where Z Point sits around Chikmagalur, the distance, tour operators, whether the trail is open, booking, the starting point, and the best season. One caution up front: the published numbers for distance, time, fees and hours disagree, so we show the ranges and name the sources.
Best Z Point Trek Experiences: Five Ways to Do It
These five are our own selection from what the sources describe, and prices come from commercial pages that may be out of date.
1. The Classic Walk From Raj Bhavan

Muddie Trails, Namma Trip and the TravelSetu guide all describe the trek as starting near Raj Bhavan in Kemmangundi and climbing through forest and ridge trails to the viewpoint. Muddie Trails puts it at about 2.5 to 3 km one way, and TravelSetu calls it a moderately difficult trail with a steep climb near the end.
2. An Early Start or a Sunset Walk

TravelTriangle suggests early morning or the afternoon for sunset, and Muddie Trails advises starting early and being back before dusk. A 2018 Tripoto account of a group caught in sudden rain advises avoiding the trek after 4 pm. Our own suggestion is to start by mid-morning and keep a margin before dark.
3. A Weekend Group Trek From Bangalore

Operator Namma Trip sells a two-day, one-night weekend trek from Bangalore at ₹2,799 per person without transport or ₹2,999 with transport, before a booking fee, platform charges and GST. It lists a guide, a trek permit, forest entry, meals and tent or dormitory stay, with an overnight departure from Bangalore.
4. The Jeep-Assisted Option

Muddie Trails says jeeps near Raj Bhavan cost about ₹500 to ₹600 and cover about half the distance, adding that most trekkers prefer to walk the full trail. TravelTriangle gives ₹600 per jeep for those who do not want to trek. Both are commercial pages, so confirm the rate locally.
5. Z Point With Hebbe Falls and Shanti Falls

Muddie Trails puts Shanti Falls about 1.5 km into the walk as a rest stop with cool water after the monsoon. The Tripoto account describes combining the trek with Hebbe Falls, and Namma Trip’s second day includes Raj Bhavan Gardens and optional nearby falls.
Z Point Chikmagalur: Where It Sits and What Surrounds It
People searching z point chikmagalur are usually looking for a day out from Chikmagalur town, but the viewpoint is in Kemmangundi, a separate hill station. What the sources say:
- Location: Wikipedia describes Kemmangundi as a hill station in Tarikere taluk of Chikmagalur district, and mentions the Horticulture Department and Jungle Lodges among its visitor facilities.
- Distance from Chikmagalur: About 55 to 70 km depending on the source: Muddie Trails gives 60 to 70 km in its table and about 55 km in its FAQ, TravelTriangle says about 60 km, and a Tripoto account says about 65 km. Muddie Trails puts the drive at around two hours.
- Elevation: About 1,400 m per TravelSetu and about 1,500 m per TravelTriangle.
- Rating: TripAdvisor shows 4.5 out of 5 from 144 user reviews and ranks Z Point fifth of 50 things to do in Chikmagalur.
- Nearby: Hebbe Falls, Shanti Falls and the Raj Bhavan gardens, as covered above.
Z Point Trek Distance and Time
The Z Point trek distance is given as about 2 to 4 km one way, with no source we read measuring it precisely:
- About 2 km: One personal blog.
- About 2.5 to 3 km: Muddie Trails.
- About 3 km: Namma Trip and TravelSetu.
- About 3 to 4 km: Tata Neu.
- 2 to 5 km: TripAdvisor reviewers, with roughly 3 to 3.5 km one way the most common estimate and one reviewer giving about 5 km round trip.
Time varies as much as distance:
- 45 minutes to 1 hour: Muddie Trails’ overview, though its FAQ says 1.5 to 2 hours each way at a relaxed pace.
- 1.5 to 2 hours: Namma Trip’s FAQ for the climb.
- 2 to 3 hours: TravelTriangle, depending on pace.
- 1 to 2 hours each way: TripAdvisor reviewers, with one group reporting under 2 hours round trip at a slow pace.
A sensible plan, which is our own suggestion, is to allow three to four hours for the round trip including the viewpoint and Shanti Falls.
Z Point Tours and Travels Chikmagalur: Operators and Packages
We found no business listed under exactly Z Point Tours and Travels Chikmagalur. These are the operators and package pages that do appear for Z Point, all commercial:
- Namma Trip: A Bangalore weekend trek at ₹2,799 to ₹2,999 per person, with a phone number for confirming slots. Its page says forest permits are not guaranteed and that, if they are unavailable, it offers an alternative trek or rescheduling with no refund. The page also contradicts itself on whether permits are included and on minimum group size, so ask before paying.
- Muddie Trails: A Chikmagalur travel company with a Z Point guide and Chikmagalur packages from Bangalore, with booking phone numbers and an email address on its page.
- Tejas Travels and Nithesh Tours and Travels: Both appeared in search results with Kemmangundi or Chikmagalur itineraries, and we did not read their details.
- What to ask any operator: Our own suggestion is to ask whether the guide, forest entry, meals and insurance are included, who the cancellation terms favour, and what happens in heavy rain.

Is Z Point Trek Open? Hours, Seasons and Current Status

The short answer to is Z Point trek open is that we found no source reporting a closure and none confirming today’s status. The published hours:
- 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM: TripAdvisor’s listing and TravelTriangle, which says every day.
- 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM: One personal blog, for the gate.
- Open 24 hours and all year: TravelSetu, which lists Monday to Saturday and does not mention Sunday.
- No gate hours stated: Muddie Trails, which advises starting early and returning before dusk.
- Rain advisories: In October 2024, Deccan Herald reported that Chikmagalur’s deputy commissioner asked tourists to postpone visits for a week and sought a seven-day suspension of trekking run by homestays, resorts and the Forest Department because of landslide risk. The article does not mention Kemmangundi or Z Point, but it shows organised treks can be paused in heavy rain.
Late October is within the recommended season, but call a local operator or the forest checkpost before driving up.

Z Point Trek Booking: What You Need to Reserve
For Z Point trek booking, the answer depends on how you go:
- Independent walkers: We found no official online booking page for the trail. One personal blog describes free entry with a ₹10 toll for walkers between Hebbe Falls and Z Point, while Muddie Trails mentions about ₹100 per person for Kemmangundi entry and TravelTriangle gives ₹100 per adult at the checkpost. Tata Neu says a fee might be required. These conflict, so carry cash and confirm at the gate.
- Group packages: Namma Trip takes online bookings and asks you to contact it first to confirm slot availability.
- Accommodation: Muddie Trails lists booking numbers for stays and packages, and Namma Trip includes tents or dormitories.
- Jeep: Hired on the spot near Raj Bhavan, per Muddie Trails.
Z Point Trek Starting Point: Raj Bhavan or the Entrance Gate
The Z Point trek starting point is described two ways, so know both:
- Raj Bhavan: Muddie Trails, Namma Trip and TravelSetu say the trek begins at or near Raj Bhavan, which TravelSetu calls the Kemmanagundi Raj Bhavan Hotel.
- The Z Point entrance gate: One personal blog describes starting at a gate with a toll between Hebbe Falls and Z Point.
- Navigation warning: A December 2024 TripAdvisor reviewer says Google Maps shows the wrong location and advises continuing past the expected point toward the Hebbe Falls entrance.
- A sign on the road: The Tripoto account says to watch for a sign on the left on the way to Hebbe Falls.
- Our own suggestion: Ask a local at Raj Bhavan which entry point is in use on the day.

What is the Best Time to Visit Z Point?

Muddie Trails recommends September to February, with temperatures about 14 °C to 22 °C, and TravelTriangle says September to March. Both advise against the monsoon: Muddie Trails says leeches are abundant and trails slippery from June to September, and several TripAdvisor reviewers warn about leeches. The Tripoto account describes sudden rain making the single-file path slippery, and a 2022 TripAdvisor report mentions winds of about 80 km/h near the top, so carry a light jacket. Late October is inside the recommended window.
How to Reach Z Point?
Muddie Trails gives Tarikere railway station at about 30 to 35 km (about an hour), Shivamogga airport at about 71 km, Mangalore airport at about 212 km (five to six hours) and Chikmagalur at roughly two hours by road. TravelTriangle puts Shivamogga at about 74 km and Tarikere at about 35 km. One personal blog mentions a bus from Lingadahalli in the morning and late afternoon, and an older TripAdvisor review calls the access road poor and not advisable in heavy rain or fog. Wear sturdy shoes and carry water; Muddie Trails and TravelTriangle both recommend it, and TravelTriangle suggests a local guide for beginners.
Timing note: We found no current-season report on the trail’s condition. Check the weather, avoid starting late in the day, and turn back if rain makes the path slippery, as the Tripoto group did about 100 m below the top.
