Most people picture cherry blossoms in spring, but in India the best-known bloom is in autumn. The wild Himalayan cherry turns the hills around Shillong pink in the weeks before winter, while Kashmir’s spring bloom comes in March and April. This guide to the Cherry Blossom Season in India covers five places and their months, why the tree flowers twice a year, a month-by-month calendar, peak weeks and photo tips for Shillong, and the festivals worth planning around. A timely point: the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival is on November 20 and 21, 2026, about four weeks from now, and one travel company says that falls late in the bloom window.
Best Cherry Blossom Season in India: Five Places and Their Months
Sources disagree on some months, so each stop gives the dated source. Treat the months as a guide and confirm closer to your trip.
1. Shillong, Meghalaya: Late October to November

Shillong is the best-known spot. Outlook Traveller (updated November 2024) gives late October to November, with the annual festival in November near Ward’s Lake and the Polo Grounds, and suggests the Umiam Lake area and the edge of Shillong Golf Course for quieter views. An earlier Outlook Traveller piece from 2023 says only that Meghalaya blooms in spring, which conflicts with every other source we found, so we treat it as an error.

2. Kohima, Nagaland: November

Outlook Traveller (2024) lists November for trees near Kisama Heritage Village and the Naga Heritage Complex, with views from Japfu Peak and Pulie Badze Wildlife Sanctuary, and notes the Hornbill Festival follows in December. The 2023 Outlook Traveller article is broader, giving January to April and September to November for wild Himalayan cherries around Kohima Botanical Garden and Khuzama village.

3. North Sikkim: November

Outlook Traveller (2024) names Lachung and Lachen in November, with pink blossoms against snow-capped peaks and little publicity, near Gurudongmar Lake and Yumthang Valley. The 2023 article recommends the second and third weeks of November in Khangchendzonga National Park.

4. Himachal Pradesh: March and Late October to November

Himachal has two windows in the sources. Outlook Traveller (2023) lists Mashobra village, about 10 km from Shimla, for March. Village Square (December 2024) says the wild cherry, locally called pajja, flowers from late October through November in Bir village in Kangra district, most visibly in November, at 1,000 to 2,000 metres.

5. Srinagar and Baramulla, Kashmir: Late March to April

Outlook Traveller (2024) gives late March to April, with almond blossoms at Badamwari Garden and cherry trees at Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh with Dal Lake behind them. Business Today (February 2026) says March is the main window and that Badamwari has almond, apricot and cherry blossoms in early spring.

Cherry Blooming Season: Why India Has Two?

India has two windows because the Himalayan cherry flowers twice a year. According to Wikipedia, Prunus cerasoides blooms from January to April and again from September to November, and its centre of diversity is the Eastern Himalayas, extending west to Himachal Pradesh. That helps explain why a cherry blooming season can be quoted as autumn in Shillong and Sikkim and as spring elsewhere. The sources do not say which tree is blooming at each spring spot, so the Kashmir and Mashobra blossoms may include other fruit trees, and the place-by-place months above come from the travel and news pieces named rather than from a botanical source.

Cherry Blossom Timing: A Month-by-Month Calendar
For planning the cherry blossom timing of a trip, this calendar pulls the sources together. Months overlap and shift with the weather:
- January to April: The first of the tree’s two flowering periods, according to Wikipedia, and the months Outlook Traveller gives for Nagaland alongside September to November.
- March: Mashobra near Shimla (Outlook Traveller, 2023) and the early spring blossoms at Badamwari in Srinagar (Business Today, 2026).
- Late March to April: Srinagar and Baramulla in Kashmir (Outlook Traveller, 2024).
- September to November: The second flowering period, according to Wikipedia.
- Late October to mid-November: Shillong, with a peak in the first two weeks of November according to a travel company’s guide, and Bir in Himachal from late October.
- November: Kohima in Nagaland, North Sikkim and Khangchendzonga National Park, and the Shillong festival.
- November to December: Thenzawl in Mizoram, a less commercialised spot with blossoms over green valleys and walks to Thenzawl Deer Park and Vantawng Falls (Outlook Traveller, 2024).
Autumn Cherry Blossoms in India: Meet the Himalayan Cherry
The autumn cherry blossoms of India’s hills belong to the wild Himalayan cherry, Prunus cerasoides. Wikipedia describes pinkish-white flowers on a tree of temperate forest between about 1,200 and 2,400 metres, while Village Square gives 1,000 to 2,000 metres for Himachal, so the exact range depends on the source. A few things the sources say about it:
- Names: Wikipedia lists wild Himalayan cherry in English, padam, pajja and padmakashtha in Hindi, paiyu in Nepali, dieng kaditusoo in Khasi and tlaizawng in Mizo.
- Sacred in places: Wikipedia says the tree is considered sacred in parts of India, and that it is widely revered in Uttarakhand.
- A lotus-like scent: Village Square says its name, Padmak, comes from the lotus-like fragrance of the pink flowers.
- Everyday uses: Wikipedia says the fruit is eaten raw or cooked, the wood is hard and aromatic, and the leaves are used as incense. In Bir, however, Village Square says the bitter fruit is not eaten, and Ayurveda uses the seeds, fruit, bark, gum and flowers in herbal formulations.
- Short-lived flowers: Highland Post says the bloom lasts only a week or two before the petals fall, while a travel company puts it at two to three weeks per tree.
Best Time to See Cherry Blossoms in Shillong: Peak Weeks and Spots

For the best time to see cherry blossoms in Shillong, Breeziah, a travel company that also sells group trips, says trees usually flower from late October to mid-November, with the peak in the first two weeks of November. Curly Tales (July 2026) also gives late October and November. The company notes that the 2026 festival on November 20 and 21 falls late in that window. Its viewing spots, which we have not independently checked:
- Ward’s Lake: Named as the best single spot, near Police Bazar, with a small entry fee of about Rs 10.
- Shillong Golf Course: Along the Golf Links area.
- Polo Grounds area: Free, street-level trees.
- Lady Hydari Park: A small entry fee of about Rs 10.
- The road to Upper Shillong: Free roadside viewing.
Photo and etiquette tips from the same guide: shoot between about 6:30 and 8 am, use cloudy days to avoid washed-out pinks, frame the flowers against pines or water, visit Ward’s Lake at opening time for fewer crowds, don’t shake branches or pick flowers, and stay out of private compounds. It also advises checking recent dated photos or asking a local driver because bloom timing varies each year.

Cherry Blossom Bloom Time: How Long It Lasts and What Shifts It
The cherry blossom bloom time at any one spot is short. Each tree flowers for one to three weeks according to the sources above, and Highland Post says the Shillong festival is usually held in mid to late November to coincide with peak bloom, with exact dates changing each year with the weather. Because the sources disagree on the weeks, for example peak in the first two weeks of November versus a festival in the third week, the safest approach is to plan a window rather than a single day:
Our own suggestion: for Shillong, aim for the first half of November and keep a spare day or two, and check dated photos in the week before you travel. For the spring bloom in Kashmir, aim for late March and early April and check Badamwari reports. We did not find a source that explains what shifts the dates beyond the weather.
Cherry Blossom Time of Year: Festivals and Events to Plan Around
The cherry blossom time of year also brings events. In Shillong, the festival is the main draw:
- Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2026: November 20 and 21, 2026, from 2 pm, at the New Shillong Highland Grounds (the venue’s name is spelled differently across sources), about 30 minutes from the city. Meghalaya Tourism lists music, live stage shows, cultural experiences, local food and art showcases.
- Lineup and tickets: Khalid, Swae Lee and Boys Like Girls are the first three headliners, with more acts to be announced. Time Out says single-day passes start at Rs 2,500 through RockskiTickets, with sales that opened on September 4, 2026.
- History: Highland Post says the Meghalaya government launched it in 2016, with the first edition opening on November 14 that year. It says the festival was cancelled in 2022 and that Japan became an official partner in 2024.
- Hornbill Festival, Kohima: Outlook Traveller says it follows the November bloom in December.
- Badamwari, Srinagar: The spring blossom spot in March, with the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden open for a few weeks in late March, according to Business Today.
Season note: No 2026 bloom-status report was found, and none of the sources gives weather, crowd or price data for the blossom weeks beyond the festival ticket prices. Nagaland, Sikkim and Mizoram bloom months come from older Outlook Traveller pieces. Check recent photos, hotel availability and local travel advisories before booking.
